College. Done right, it’s still an opportunity to influence the lives of young men in a positive way. We focus on the big programs, but there are literally hundreds of colleges that never send a player onto the NFL, but they send thousands of quality men into the world. And the lessons they learn being part of a team can be a huge part of that.
There are a few NFL coaches that have that kind of effect on their players (Lombardi, Walsh) but for the most part, today’s NFL coach is just trying to corral overpaid spoiled brats.

College. It’s easier, plain and simple. But, I guess not then. I’d want to take at least a crack at the real game…

College, respect being the key word.

I think college coaches are more loved. Consider Amos Alonzo Stagg, Bear Bryant, Ara Parsegian (sp), Bo Schembechler, Knute Rockne, Joe Paterno, and dozens more. Look at Coach K and John Wooden and Lute Olson on the basketball level.
Certainly there are famous NFL coaches who are also hugely respected: Halas, Lombardi, Parcells, Walsh. But the college colleges are respected and loved.

I think it depends far more on the character of the person coaching than the environment. There are many high school coaches I respect more than most NFL coaches.

I’d like college because you can influence things more than at the pro level where the GM has to work it.

Definitely coaching college football. Think about it, college football players go out so much HARDER than the pros because they HAVEN’T made it yet. And, if they ever DO become professionals, you knew them way back when, and were a witness to them realizing their dreams!
I think both professions are perfectly respectable, but as far as rewarding, I still say college.

    WTF says:

As a coach – NFL, the game is just so much more difficult to coach. As a teacher – College the game makes men out of boys.

    Vegas Matt says:

If you want a stable career and respect for long term achievements, college coaching is the way to go. Sustained success in the NFL is much more impressive, but even the best coach in the NFL can get fired at the drop of a hat. In college you might take heat for a bad season or 2, but you can recover and stay the coach for a long time even at the powerhouse schools.

    NFL.. not even close.
There may be a small handful of college coaches who achieve fame and respect, but 98% of them are only known and respected by their OWN fans.
