*Reports out of Tennessee suggest strongly that Chris Brown has now moved ahead of LenDale White in the battle for the starting RB job. Head coach Jeff Fisher noted how White has hurt his chances by once again missing practice due to injuries which opened the door for Brown to step in. Brown was a decent fantasy option for the first 10 games or so back in 2004 but has been a non-entity since then due to his own battle with injuries. If he does in fact get the job, he is worth an add as a third back who you hope gets off to a good start and builds up trade value. If that does indeed occur, then deal Brown to the first guy who makes you an offer.

*The Atlanta Falcons have called the Oakland Raiders to gauge the availability of QB’s Josh McCown and Andrew Walter. Apparently the Falcons aren’t convinced that the so far solid play of Joey Harrington will carry over into the season. This deal makes sense for both parties in that the Raiders have four QB’s(Ja Marcus Russell when he signs, and Daunte Culpepper also) and need to cut or trade one before the opener, while the Falcons have a glaring hole at the position due to someone in the news getting into some kind of trouble. If McCown lands in Atlanta and gets the chance the start, he could be a borderline bye week fill-in as he has demonstrated decent ability in spurts while with Arizona.

*Newly signed Chiefs RB Larry Johnson hinted he doesn’t feel he will be ready for a full workload in Week 1 due to missing so much time in camp with his holdout. “What I know about myself is I’ve never been a fast starter coming out of the blocks in a season.” If that’s the case, backups Michael Bennett and rookie Kolby Smith could see some increased time spelling Johnson. This is a tricky play for Week 1 owners in that Johnson may see as few as 15 carries but 15 carries for him could be worth more than 25 from someone else. If you have a decent third back, start him. If not, than put Johnson in and appreciate what he can contribute.

*Word out New England is that Sammy Morris may become the kiss of death(A.K.A. goal-line back) for Laurence Maroney owners. Maroney is coming off major off-season shoulder surgery and coach Bill Belichick has made note how he worries about the pounding that shoulder could take inside the cramped quarters of the red zone. If this plan does go through, it would be devastating news to Maroney owners who were hoping for a bust out season. This would send Maroney from RB 1 status to RB 2 status in a heartbeat. Pay attention to this situation and get the bucket to puke in if this does come to fruition.

*Deverey Henderson once again is dealing with injuries and could wind up missing the season opener as a result. A bum hamstring is the culprit this time and so Terrence Copper could join Marques Colston in the starting lineup in Week 1. Henderson has tons of talent but injuries continue to hurt his development and ultimately kill his fantasy football prospects. Don’t cut him right now by any means if your an owner but if this keeps up throughout the year, then it may be time to let him go.

*Jets RB Thomas Jones continues to miss practice and ride the stationary bike as he recovers from a strained calf. Head coach Eric Mangini continues to insist Jones will be ready for the opener against New England but the more time he misses, the more likely it is he sits out in Week 1. At this point count on Jones playing as he seems to be doing better but have other options ready in case he has to sit this one out.

*Late word out of Green Bay is that RB Vernand Morency is making rapid progress in his recovery from a strained patellar tendon in his knee and might in fact be ready to play in Week 1. It was originally thought that Morency was going to be out at least until Week 2 but now it appears he will be back at practice within a few days. This has a negative fantasy impact on Brandon Jackson owners who were hoping he would have the job all to himself in Week 1 so that he could prove he could handle the load and not the give the Pack front office a reason to take the job from him. It is no secret the coaches want Morency to start due to his experience and the fact Jackson has been horrible at picking up blitzes. At the very least, this looks like a dreaded time-share and ultimately a killing of both players’ fantasy impact.

Intrigued by the idea of fantasy football, it’s not too late to
get involved. A lot of people have heard of the term fantasy
football, but aren’t sure what it is. A search on fantasy

So… what is fantasy football?

Here’s the lowdown. First, there’s a fantasy football
commissioner, who’s in charge of the league, much the same as in
real-life. The commissioner puts in the most amount of money to
be the biggest cheese. This person is the final arbiter of
disputes, makes decisions and, in general, gets to have the most
leeway – and the most headaches – in the league.

Then there are the team owners. These individuals pay a lesser
fee than the fantasy football commissioner, and manage their own
teams. The owners choose who will be on the teams, what players
will start, and so on.

So, the owners need teams. The next step is to pool all the
real-world pro football players, rank them and then have a
draft. Each team owner takes turns picking players for his or
her team – hence the name fantasy football. Depending on how the
draft goes, your team could be a true fantasy. Of course, some
leagues have salary caps just as in real life, which prohibits
one team from having all the best players. Trades are usually
allowed, though depending on the league, they may be limited.

So once the fantasy football commissioner has a full roster of
teams and the teams have a full roster of players… what
happens? This is where things get interesting.

Team owner Alpha has players X, Y and Z on the team. In real
life, player X is on one team, player Y on another and player Z
on yet another. Before the game, Alpha has to decide who is
starting, who isn’t, and what’s going on. Alpha then gives this
information (by whatever means the fantasy football league has)
to the commissioner. This information must be set in stone prior
to the actual Sunday and Monday football games that NFL teams
such as the Patriots and the Raiders play.

The real AFC & NFC teams play. Let’s say player X is on the
Eagles in real life and is a quarterback. This Sunday, he throws
three touchdown passes and the Eagles win. Fantasy football team
owner Alpha has X on the team and, very smartly, started X for
the football fantasy league games.

How this translates in fantasy football depends on the league.

The usual standard is that for every possible situation, a team
can earn points. For example, the real life touchdowns of player
X may earn fantasy football owner Alpha four hundred points
each. Alpha may come out of the weekend as the biggest point
earner, thanks to player X, which then sets Alpha up for
contention as the fantasy football league winner.

Of course, this assumes that player X wasn’t benched at the last
minute, depriving Alpha of earning any points and ending last in
the fantasy football league.

The ultimate prize at the season’s end may be a statue or
possibly money, depending on which fantasy football league you
join. Or it may just be the prestige of knowing that you
outwitted all the other team owners and came out as top dog.

While this fantasy may come with a price tag for participation,
if you enjoy the game and avidly watch the players anyway,
fantasy football can be a harmless way to spend some time.

While he was listed as a mid-rounder, The Hass was supposed to be the sleeper that made it acceptable to pass on all those high-end QBs like Brees, Manning, and even Matt Schaub.  After all, he was leading what was supposed to be a pass-first offense in Seattle with weapons galore: TJ Houshmanzadeh, Deion Branch, and co.  He garners the #2 spot because he was a constant tease, frequently earning a spot on most fantasy sites’ MUST START lists due to his often favorable match-ups.   While Hasselbeck owners remained loyal week after week, all they got were more and more turnovers and a one-way ticket out of playoffland.

Most fantasy experts listed Forte as #2 or #3 overall in the pre-season rankings.  Well, here he is at #3 again.  In a mostly abysmal Bears offense, Forte was the least productive of them all, treating the end zone like it was swirling with H1N1 virus.   He failed to have a 1,000 yard rushing season, a common feat accomplished by fifteen of his running back colleagues. And, he had a whopping six fumbles.

The Burner didn’t burn it up in the yardage department, rushing for less than our #3 pick.  His ten touchdowns were fine – for a #3 back.  But considering his multiple multi-TDs of the previous season, and his clearly inflated status by many, including Matthew Berry who had him at #1, Turner owners are about the only ones feeling The Burn (thanks, I’ll be here all night.).

Sure, T.O. is always a risky pick due to his propensity toward the maniacal.  But even approaching AARP membership by today’s standards, we still expected productivity out of TO.  Instead, we got The Invisible Man until the last couple weeks of the season.  There are many angles to highlight his piss poor season, but #33 in receiving yards probably sums it up best.
