Round 7, Pick 3 - DE Brian Johnston (Gardner-Webb) - Score: 8
Round 7, Pick 32 - TE Mike Merritt (Central Florida) - Score: 3
Usage of Draft Picks for Team Needs Score: 9
Notes
The Kansas City Chiefs addressed every issue they had. First off, they walked away from day one
as the big winners, snagging Glenn Dorsey and Branden Albert. Dorsey was a top three prospect
and Branden Albert was a top ten prospect. They then creep back into the mix of things by reeling
in former Hokie CB Brandon Flowers, a top notch impact with greater upside than fellow former
Hokie CBs DeAngelo Hall and Jimmy Williams.
Jamaal Charles was a suspect pick though, as he won't haul in many passes and doesn't have
great vision. TE Brad Cottam and Mike Merritt will compete to be blockers. Cottam has deceptive
speed and could be a gamer for a long-time if he studies behind Tony Gonzalez.
S DaJuan Morgan was a steal in the third round as we had him pegged as the second best
safety in the draft. CB Brandon Carr is a true athlete that will be very good for the Chiefs on special
teams.
OT Barry Richardson is a workout warrior minus the intangibles. Dude is completely ripped.
DE Brian Johnston, one of our favorite prospects, is the best value pick, defensively, in this draft. We had this small school stud going in the late 2nd to early 3rd.
WRs William Franklin and Kevin Robinson are sure to land roster spots. Kevin Robinson is the one to keep an eye on as we think he could be of the Wes Welker
variety. Robinson will have an immediate impact as the Chiefs return man but he is an ideal candidate to be the underneath route pass catcher on the team.
2. Denver Broncos (5.8 out of 10)
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 12 - OT Ryan Clady (Boise State) - Score: 5
Round 2, Pick 11 - WR Eddie Royal (Virginia Tech) - Score: 5
Round 4, Pick 9 - OC Kory Lichtensteiger (Bowling Green) - Score: 2
Round 4, Pick 20 - CB Jack Williams (Kent State) - Score: 7
Round 5, Pick 4 - RB Ryan Torain (Arizona State) - Score: 6
Round 5, Pick 13 - DT Carlton Powell (Virginia Tech) - Score: 6
Round 6, Pick 17 - ILB Spencer Larsen (Arizona) - Score: 8
Round 7, Pick 13 - S Josh Barrett (Arizona State) - Score: 7
Round 7, Pick 20 - FB Peyton Hillis (Arkansas) - Score: 7
Usage of Draft Picks for Team Needs Score: 5
Notes
The Broncos took a flier on Ryan Clady, the typical boom or bust prospect and then in the third round, follow it up on a college center that will be moved to OG
despite having really short arms for a guy of his stature. Eddie Royal was a complete reach with guys like Mario Manningham and Malcolm Kelly on the board.
CB Jack Williams is very underrated and will battle with CB Foxworth for the nickel back job. S Josh Barrett will pan out to be a good pick as he will buy his time
from backing up S John Lynch.
Ryan Torain is a very talented RB coming off a devastating injury. This could end up being a great value pick. FB Peyton Hillis has enough speed to beat
defender's to the corner. Is he the next Reuben Droughns? Probably not but he should make the final roster.
Spencer Larsen is solely a middle linebacker but he will do well. DT Carlton Powell is a prospect without much upside.
3. Oakland Raiders (5.7 out of 10)
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 4 - RB Darren McFadden (Arkansas) - Score: 5
Round 4, Pick 1 - CB Tyvon Branch (Connecticut) - Score: 8
Round 4, Pick 26 - WR Arman Shields (Richmond) - Score: 7
Round 6, Pick 13 - DE Trevor Scott (Buffalo) - Score: 6
Round 7, Pick 19 - WR Chaz Schilens (San Diego State) - Score: 3
Usage of Draft Picks for Team Needs Score: 5
Notes
Oakland finished fifth in rushing last year, mostly due to the success of RB Justin Fargas, who is returning in 2008. Add to the fact that RB Michael Bush will be
ready for the start of 2008 and owner Al Davis has no reason to pass on DT Glenn Dorsey, DE Vernon Gholston, or DT Sedrick Ellis for Darren McFadden. Mind
you, McFadden had over 20 fumbles during his career as a Razorback (zero fumbles lost).
CB Branch is an exciting prospect. He will have an immediate impact as a punt and kick returner but his specialty comes in the secondary where he may
eventually move over to safety.
The Raiders selected a pair of WRs. Arman Shields is a 6'1" wide-out that can run a 4.37 forty. His junior year was better than his senior year but we all know that
Al Davis loves his physical freaks. The other WR, Chaz Schilens is nothing special. Schilens just had a very good forty at his pro day.
DE Trevor Scott is a tall playmaker whom had great workout numbers. Go figure.
4. San Diego Chargers (5.3 out of 10)
Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 27 - CB Antoine Cason (Arizona) - Score: 8
Round 3, Pick 6 - RB Jacob Hester (LSU) - Score: 4
Round 5, Pick 31 - RB Marcus Thomas (UTEP) - Score: 6
Round 6, Pick 26 - CB DeJuan Tribble (Boston College) - Score: 6
Round 7, Pick 27 - OT Corey Clark (Texas A&M) - Score: 2
Usage of Draft Picks for Team Needs Score: 6
Notes
San Diego entered April needing defensive line help, offensive line help, and a safety or two. They
ended up with none of the above except for a seventh round offensive tackle. OT Corey Clark had
a weak combine. He does have two years of experience for an Aggies front line that was humiliated
plenty of times over the last two years.
CB Antoine Cason is a great pick. While this does boost the group of CBs, already led by Antonio
Cromartie, it wasn't necessarily the direction where San Diego should have went, especially with
S Kenny Phillips still on the board. CB Tribble is a bit undersized but he is a hard, blue collar worker.
The other two picks were Jacob Hester and Marcus Thomas. Hester is considered to be a fullback by some but will earn a roster spot in Norv Turner's
fullback-less offense as a backup to LaDainian Tomlinson. Hester isn't quick but he has a great motor and a great pair of hands. Marcus Thomas' playing style is
very similar to Hester's but Thomas has more bulk to him.
